The Weeping Woman | There she is off in the distance behind the herd. These cows are so beautiful! |
I enjoy how art turns up everywhere! I went on a genuine Cow Safari at the Tait Farm and on the way through was shown some accidental art. A burned tree left this sculpture behind. It is entirely reminiscent of a Giacometti sculpture.
As the great Michelangelo once said "Every block of stone has a sculpture inside of it.."
Well, maybe every tree has a sculpture in it too and some just want to present themselves to the world.
Mother's Day was spent at the parent's place taking care of a bunch of their yard work. The 5 of us kids got a ton of stuff done for them! We had a big potluck afterwards and I was in charge of desserts. My homemade carrot cake turned out so yummy!
I had to make a birthday cake this weekend. I worked in a bakery before I was an art teacher so I have had lots of experience working with cakes and learning from some very talented professional pastry chefs and cake decorators. It sure was fun getting all the decorating materials out to complete this project!

This post doesn't necessarily have to do with "fine art" but rather an observation on how color can change the mood of a room. I spent the evening re-painting my bathroom and I love the new warmer tone. The color I chose to paint it a few years ago was an icy blue. It was very pretty set against the white fixtures and lace shower curtain, but it was a rather frigid color and wasn't very inviting. The grayish purple color that I chose to repaint with sounds cold when I describe it, but it has a brownish note to it which really warms the whole room up. I think it looks and feels rich, especially as it is off-set from the new, more modern weaved white curtain.
Exciting News! The winners from the Hutchinson Center for the Arts Gingerbread Contest were announced and I won!
The Hutchinson Center for the Arts is hosting the "Meet the Board" art show. I have 14 drawings and 4 paintings hanging in the show. Last night was the opening reception and around 70 people attended!! It was a fun night.
About every 20 or so drawings I do, I find that I take "leaps" in skill level. It's as if suddenly I understand how the pencil behaves differently and I am able to achieve higher quality results. I feel like that happened yesterday as I was drawing my latest portrait. I will post the image of it soon!
My dear friend and fellow artist, Carol Gustavson, will be having her exhibit "Imperial Mystery" showcased at the Hutchinson Center for the Arts from November 1-November 18. I will be meeting with her tomorrow to help her set up her show.
For those of you unfamiliar with Carol's work, she is a Japanese Shibori artist who works at the mastery level of her art. She is recognized by the Japanese Government for her dedication to creating and preserving the ancient tradition of Shibori. She is an exceptional woman.
As much as I miss summertime, I absolutely love fall mornings. Outside, it is cool, but it makes blankets feel that much warmer and hot coffee taste that much better. Let the crisp air inspire a 5 minute sketched out drawing and when you are finished, hang it on your refrigerator. Don't worry about it being perfect, just put lines down on the paper and see what happens.
And I'm serious about hanging it on your refrigerator! Be proud of what you created today.
